Ian - how did you manage to review the album without mentioning (the highlight of Jens' current live set) 'Postcard to Nina'? Sure it doesn't have the quaint backstory and it feels over-produced in light of his personal appearances; but its still gotta be one of the album highlights. I think you've undersold one of the finest albums of the past few years.

I don't know, dude - his debut was and is my favourite record of 2005 and the You're So Silent Jens compilation is classic as well, but no matter how much I listened to this one it just didn't stick as much. I can't even remember how "Postcard to Nina" goes offhand, which given how much I wanted to love this is saying a LOT. But like I say, I also find this one reassuring because he definitely seems to be in for the long haul.

Mathers you blew this one. Much more cohesive and just flat-out better written, both musically and lyrically (if you are open to the sappiness, which I am) than either of his last two albums. Not a single even slightly weak track and the highlight of the year so far. A.

Postcard to Nina (A Synopsis): Jens turns up to an old friends house when visiting Berlin. She lives with her Lesbian partner of years; the love is pretty obvious. Old friend springs on Jens that she is having dinner with her father... oh and by the way i lied to him and told him we're engaged. Jens is flustered and tries to get his shit together, lots of off-hand lines reminiscent of yer typical 'green-card' type movie etc... Turns out the father know who Jens is, has the album etc, probes him with all these questions (another reference, this time Jens puts his hand on a Lie Detector). Meanwhile the song revolves around the 'I can't be your boyfriend / so you should stay with your girlfriend' lyric... Its really funny and charming and the songs refrain is really great.

Ah, that one! Yeah, that one is pretty good.

I was pretty underwhelmed with this when I first heard it but I now think that it is just a shade below the debut. Can't wait to hear what he conjures up next.
