An overly lavish, if not slightly self-indulgent review. Some shimmering highlights in the middle two paragraphs, but ultimately fails in it's overall intention due to narrowmindedness and preconception. I award this review one out of five stars.

too many declarations without explanations. too much focus on his persona and emotional connectivity and not enough on his compositions.

I understand what you're saying, but the point is that the compositions to me, largely sink or swim on the emotional connectivity. Melodically, a lot of these songs don't go anywhere. Hell, even "Step Into The Light" isn't on the level of notes or anything an amazing composition; it's amazing because of the astonishingly felt performance and the sheer emotional weight of the words. That's why some of this album is brilliant. But lots of it is just... pleasant. I respect Darren Hayes as an artist. B- is not a bad mark by any means. I just don't think "pleasant" is good enough for someone who clearly has the capacity to produce near-flawless A-standard, intelligent, felt pop. I really hope it grows on me, though. (to groovey, if you think it's bad, you should have seen it before the Editor got his hands on it, if you know what I mean!)
