wot no "Action"/"Lost Cat"/"Cathedral Park"?! This is pretty glorious though. I had forgotten about Olive's extraordinary feat.

Hmm...this list speaks as if your hot 100 chart position is correlated with the quality of your single. I thought hot 100 chart position had more to do with how nonthreatening and/or pandering the song was and how hot the lead vocalist is. So..these are the best ten songs which were safe enough and sung by an attractive enough person to almost make the top 40, but not quite?

"Hot 100" is meaningless in UK terms, it's the top 40 that counts. That's what gets played on the radio, see. So #41 is probably the equivalent of #101 in the US. This is not the place to discuss how the charts are safe and pandering, lots of great chart music is no such thing and a lot of safe, pandering music doesn't chart. (FWIW, "Cathedral Park" was considered, and "Action" was on the very short list but bumped at near the last moment in favour of Belle & Sebastian, more or less).
