I mean, yeah, that tracklist is much better than either the original album or the second disc, but then we'd get fewer songs. Priced around $15-17 most places in New York, I don't think many people buying the album would want it otherwise. And James Murphy doesn't try to get "genius points through meta," he self-deprecates through meta like a resigned middle-aged man who's had enough of the music biz. And that doesn't apply to his ripping off The Fall or Brian Eno - those sound like he's having a good time, whether or not the songs stand up to his more original pieces (I also think they don't, at all).

what does META mean? Is that one of those hacky journalist words no reader understands except other journalists, like NATCH? Jesus man dont you have a Kelly Clarkson essay to write for some local paper? You are an asshole. Go resquence your life.

Oh that helps clear up what a complete douche bag this guy is. He is actually a douche bag within a douche bag. How meta is that!

HEY DUDE, how did you know I prefer 'Since U Been Gone' to anything on this album? you have a point, zopilote, re: murphy's intentions. He clearly wants money and fame in exchange for his resignation (you don't sell it and pose for pics otherwise), but I don't truly know if he thinks its as heavy as some of the fans do.

GALKIN: Do you, by any chance, work for DFA Records? Not that it shouldn't keep you posting here, but I just think it's important to know if, say, you did.

To simplify, meta means being aware of one's own self or role or situation, which is necessary for Murphy's self-deprication. Its normally used as a prefix, like in the psychological term "metacognition" which means thinking about one's own thought process. Natch is short for naturally. As for the "go resequence your life" comment, I'm sure you're aware that the purpose of Playing God is to resequence albums to make them more perfect in the eyes (and ears) of that particular writer. Don't take offense, surely you know that the article was subjective. You're free to disagree, as I do, but I'm not about to call someone an asshole. Hopefully your criticism of Mr. Miccio (the critic) was an attempt at meta-criticism. I happen to enjoy reading Stylus everyday, and would prefer not to have to see trolls pollute the comments section.

Results 1 - 10 of about 55,700,000 for meta Results 1 - 10 of about 116,000 for "former child star".

My asshole comment refers directly to Miccio's asshole comment of "what an asshole". My attempt at criticising Miccio was not an attempt at meta-criticism, because I still don't really care about such academic crap. It was an attempt at calling him an asshole.

Too bad you didn't attempt to be whiny, you would have had a better chance of accomplishing your goal.

My goal was to call him an asshole. I am quite proud of the job I have done. I am not whining. I am actually just having a bit of fun at the expense of a mediocre writer with no point to make whatsoever. It all seems like such a useless exercise in self congratulatory journalism. It puzzles and amuses at the same time, like a bear cub discovering his unit and masturbating till he bleeds. Thanks for the laughs. And utter confusion.

I hadn't realized that not believing a record to be all genius all the time somehow equaled "being an asshole."

Posted 04/12/2005 - 06:15:21 PM by GALKIN:
It has nothing to do with being "all genius all the time". It has to do with the fact the for some reason he called James an asshole (did no one else see that???) and then proceeded to write a truly awful, pointless piece of journalism. And the fact that I think this is kind of fun.

Blanket negative criticism of art-product qualifies as a subset of assholery. I mean that's part of why I called James Murphy one! I'm guilty as charged (goes with the role) and not offended in the slightest.

Plus I got to quote Airplane!

The dude makes dance music! They were doing no-wave post disco crap in New York back in '81. In fact, Murphy kinds reminds me of Cristina, heh heh. My 3 year old daughter loves his singles.

Who honestly doesn't know what "natch" means? Anyone?

Posted 04/13/2005 - 03:12:51 AM by matos_wk:
When was the last record review that used "natch," 1985? (It's short for "naturally," holystoning.)

Mr. Miccio, I like your tracklist, i think it would have made an interesting album, but did you have to trash the guy so much? He's not trying to be a genius or score points with critics or become a rock star, he's just some guy copying the bands that he loves and he willfully admits it. It just so happens that a lot of people love what he's doing. How many bands rip of the Beatles or the Rolling Stones without anyone batting an eye? Let Mark E. Smith call him an asshole if he wants, but you don't really have much of a right to.

where did all the LCD fanboys come from? you'd think this was a weezer review.

I appreciate all the arguments here, but I figure this guy (Miccio) has been suspect since the whole Radio City thing. Therefore, point for GALKIN.

Music that is so deeply indebted to other music, and knowingly referential, really doesn't do it for me unless it's done with panache and a sense of humour. LCD Soundsystem are like the Emperor's new clothes, but the emperor is wearing a skin-coloured bathing costume - sure, he looks naked, but the joke's on us because he's actually wearing clothes that make him look naked! Well, the joke's really on James Murphy because he looks like a tool. He may be talented, there's no doubt about that, but why does he waste his energy on demonstrating how much of a clever music fan he is?

"why does he waste his energy on demonstrating how much of a clever music fan he is?" Because he's trying to tap into that lucrative "clever music fan" demographic. Murphy's a brilliant meta musician with impeccable taste; he's doing what he was born to do. I approve, but then again I have a record collection that could give Olympic weightlifters hernias.
