onceived in 2001, Stylus Magazine is a daily web magazine that specializes in music and movies. Through features and reviews, the site has attempted to build a community of writers and readers that extends the dialogue of these arts that we feel so passionately about.
And that's it. Our agenda at Stylus is to have no agenda. The music might be pop or rock or jazz or dance or alternative; it might be from a major label or it might be from somebody's bedroom. The movies may be Hollywood blockbusters, festival circuit darlings, or below-the-radar gems. It doesn't matter to us; all that matters is that we love them, and we want to help you to love them too by telling you what we love and why we love it.
But we don't just want to be a "buying guide," and to this end we hope our array of regular features can give you different perspectives on music and movies, from roundtable discussions on the latest big singles to columns detailing the magic of perfectly realized mise-en-scene or championing the merits of overlooked or unfairly maligned films and albums. We hope our regular long-form articles, a key part of Stylus since our inception, can give you an insight into other areas of music and movies that you would normally never find elsewhere.
But more than anything we want you to tell us what you think. Too often criticism is a one-way street, with critics sitting on high and decreeing tastes and trends as they see fit. We have no interest in being tastemakers—we're not cool enough for that, for a start. And so we welcome your constructive and intelligent feedback.
Being cultural arbiters, breaking new bands, telling you what to think—that's for other publications. Stylus has always had one overriding principle and always will: to convey the truth of how a writer feels about what they are discussing. Nothing more. Nothing less.
