It's a solid album, no question, but I do think it overreaches. The poseur question aside, it seems Devendra has focused more on capturing a series of historical 'sounds' than conveying his own distinct voice on this record, and though the cover suggests that that might have been intentional, it leads to an album that lacks the binding personal touch of his prior work. The imagery of Rejoicing is gone, the simple-but-effective pop songcraft of Nino is gone, and what we're left with is a pastiche nearly devoid of focus, be it musical or thematic. As a few others have said, there isn't a bad song on this album, but there aren't any engaging ones either.

I absolutely love this album. If it were 2 or 3 songs shorter, it would be flawless. Certainly the best album of his career, and a strong contender for album of the year.

As a fan of the Incredible String Ban, Donovan and Nick Drake, I thought i give this album a shot. Unfortunately Devendra's vocals kill it for me. His delivery sounds poseurish, contrived, annoying.
