This is like the second or third piece I've read on this album that expressed severe wariness about M.I.A.'s solo debut. Is it just that everyone's so incredibly giddy and exptectant about it that there's this feeling of needing to undercut expectations just in case it doesn't measure up? Or is there some sonic evidence that she might not have what it takes? All I've heard from her outside of this mixtape are the "Galang" and "Sunshowers" singles, and I thought they were both fiyah. I guess maybe there's more out there that suggests she might let us down, but I haven't heard it. Great review though, I especially liked your Heart of Darkness theorizing, that's an interesting angle I hadn't previously considered.

I gotta be honest, I've been really wary about this MIA stuff just because the hype that has fermented around her seems to overwhelm the fact that she is riding a wave of eclecticism and good timing, two things which don't neccessarily accompany good music. I enjoy Galang, but its not single-of-the-year that everyone's making it out to be. I mean, it'll be on my list, but there will be a bunch of dancehall tracks and grime tracks ahead of it.

"Galang" is SO Single of the Year (regardless of how our list turned out)! "Sunshowers" and "Fire Fire" are both great, too. The only thing I've heard off of this is "URAQT" (love it!). I just ordered the CD off turntable lab; should be coming in any day now. I absolutely cannot wait, though, to hear her album!

Well I'd pick it over "Take Me Out" admittedly ;)

Am I the only one who really dislikes this album? Let me rephrase that: It's bad.
