 Yes, good article and good perspective, especially working out the relationship between musical knowledge and character traits at the end. Well done! Imagine saying that because you can discern a Don Cherry trumpet quote, this implicitly makes you wiser, more generous, and worthier or respect. The mind boggles! And yet, almost without fail, I see/hear so many conversations about music devolve into pissing contests in obscurity and triviality. Minutiae ought to inform our appreciation of the music, not others' perception of our intellect. Anyway. Great piece, Ned.

Perhaps (unless it's on Stylus and I haven't found it yet) someone will soon tackle the role of gender in music criticism.
