This article sums up everything I've ever thought of the album. I love the first five albums, but Roxy just seemed to lose it with the last three. The majority of Ferry's solo work is boring, and this album is nowhere near "classic" material. Good work, Andrew.

OK, I'm probably biased but did Avalon really need re-appraising? Most people I know who know their Roxy Music inside out put it on a par with the first five records pretty much. They lost it with the late 70s comeback to an extent - the singles were great but the albums lacked something (terrible cover versions never helped), but Avalon seemed to be the work of a band who knoew it was the end and wanted to go out with the best record they could make.

Oh wait, so you're not reappraising it. My mistake.

Shorter version of this article: Beloved cult band achieves massive mainstream commercial success; old-school fans hate it*. Stop the fucking presses. Even shorter version of this article: Wahh, wahh, waaaaahhh. *N.B. Yeah, I do this too. But I don't turn it into an 800-word article for Stylus.
