Is that a real flute playing the main hook in My Bloody Valentine's "Soon"? Serious question, I have no idea whether it's a keyboard or the real deal.

Nice list. Really vital stuff here.

I enjoyed this list. This is the second time in the last week I've seen a mention of Prolapse. They had zero exposure in the US, and remain for me one of the best groups of the last 15 years. Also, I too believe that's not a flute in "Soon".

how about neil young's 'prime of life' off 'sleeps with angels' and lemonheads' 'break me' from 'car button cloth'? i always find the flute incredibly sad-sounding, as in melancholic. especially in 'break me'. and i don't think that's a flute on 'Soon'. good list tho.

"Hugo Ledbetter" is Huddie Ledbetter, also known as Lead Belly. Here's a great piece of writing about Astral Weeks.

No "Sure Shot"? That's the first song that came to mind when I read this list. Interesting regardless.

Right on!! "Something for Joey"! Man, I can't believe you pulled that one out. Definitely a great flute tune, as is Mercury Rev's "Empire State (Son House in Excelsis)."

I thought for sure that California Dreamin' was going to be # 1!

I also once had an aversion to Van Morrison(and to flutes in pop music in general). A fair listen to Astral Weeks changed that. I might add Boards of Canada's 'Julie and Candy' to the list. I guess it doesn't exactly fit with the rest of the list, but I'll be damned if the flute has ever sounded so mysterious and sexy.

Nice list, but it makes me sad to not see Bardo Pond on it.

I guess I don't know if it's a flute, but if it is, how Dr. Dre's "Lil' Ghetto Boy" gets left off the list is wild. That flute solo knocks me off my feet every time I hear it, partly because of how awesome it is and partly because it's happening in the background and then in the foreground of a west coast gangsta rap song about the ghetto.

id like to clamor for the inclusion of (or at least make a mention of) "flute thing" by the blues project. that flute riff is unstoppable.

I always thought that was a guitar playing the main hook in "Soon".

Re MBV, it is a guitar. And how about some love for Gil-Scott Heron and Eric Dolphy?

probably would have included "imaginary places" on a personal list. it's a good list regardless, though.

Lots of good, interesting suggestions here, although I don't know most of them, and those I do I don't like that much (Beastie Boys lol). "Soon" is the big exception; I always assumed it was some sort of keyboard/effects pedal thing, but since I almost included something that I thought was a keyboard, my only excuse is that I forgot it!

if I was including the Delgados I'd go for 'Thirteen Gliding Principles' I'd also include 'Chelsea Girls' by Nico and 'Sometimes' by Cee-Lo good list but!

Nice list... but no "Thick as a Brick"?? That song is ridiculous. :-)

Okay, maybe not the best overall song with flute, but the flute is strong.
