 Surely the fact that Miyazaki adapted this one from a book by Diana Wynne Jones has something to do with the ending?

 That's a good point that I should have mentioned in the review. It was his first adapted screenplay since Kiki's Delivery Service, if I remember correctly. But even so, one has to wonder why Miyazaki didn't put his own touches on it. It just ends so abruptly, leaving the viewer scratching their heads at what just happened. Many of the people in the theater started laughing because it's handled in such a goofy manner. Though I've never read or even heard of the book before this, I suspect that even with the material he had to work with he could have produced a far more graceful ending.

 I just saw this last night in an undubbed, subtitled version. The local theater that's showing it requested both the dubbed and undubbed versions and they are showing them consecutively. Great idea, I say. Don't have to alienate anyone.
