Marc Romboy - Gemini (The Remixes)

Systematic has had a few great releases recently, in whatever sense each of the 20 or so Stephan Bodzin-related projects released in the last two months are great, rather than interchangeable. This remix package then, is a nice breath of fresh air, with Fairmont supplying the best of the three. He re-works “Model 1601,” arguably the only really great track on the Gemini album, adding his trademark weeping synths and making things that bit more epic. Williams takes on “Impact Disco” and comes up with a quirky electro track, though you can’t escape the feeling that the Williams well has run dry as of late. John Tejada meanwhile re-works “Jigsaw,” and well, it’s not tremendously exciting. However, the great Fairmont mix is worth a purchase, whether physically or digitally.

Robbie Williams - Rudebox

Apparently some people think this is the worst song ever made. I wouldn’t know, since the twelve doesn’t have the radio edit, nor would I care, since the Robbie Williams saga of popular disappointment and considerable national embarrassment was not on my soil or in my internet. Flogging or praising this guy, who was something of the shit in the early 90s I’m finding out, would be no cap-feather of mine. All I know is that the Chicken Lips remix has the monstrous helium-balloon synths and patient disco thrash that all the best CL/Emperor Machine remixes have, and if their “Rudebox” had had one of those naked funk outros a la their “What Else Is There?” remix for Röyksopp, it might have been their best. Chalk up another win for Riton, meanwhile, who put himself back on 2006’s map with that acidfreakout re-rub of “Angerman” and keeps himself on with this vicious maximal groove/minimal melody hard techno remix. Riton’s “Rudebox” could cousin-kiss the Cajmere remix of Juan Maclean’s “Give Me Every Little Thing,” especially given how both turn sung vocals into hoarse, robotic shouts. If you dare: Do the rudebox.

Klaxons - Gravity’s Rainbow

Rave culture is barely 20 years old, and the hangovers and post-coital guilt still remain. Now we have a photogenic band being touted as “nu rave,” and they have a member named Captain Strobe. But don’t worry just yet. The Klaxons’s single, “Gravity’s Rainbow” is more SXSW convention showcase than Ministry of Sound. It’s understandable why the tune is an MTV2 hit, “Gravity” has the right 00’s alt-rawk clichés lined up: a jerky Radio 4 bassline that smokes cigs to look tough, a heartbroken guitar melody a la Interpol, and Beck’s karaoke-ish, stoned ‘n’ dazed vocals. The remixes fit the “raver” tag a bit better. The “Nightmoves” mix struts to a decent disco kick and an acid-didgeridoo riff, but it’s the “Van She Mix” that will most likely be spun in basement clubs in Berlin and Williamsburg. It’s got Daft Punk robo-disco calls, the lost-Cinderella-on-the-dancefloor melody recalling Annie’s “Heartbeat,” and 8-bit synth twinkles worthy of “The Legend Of Zelda.” Finely calculated stuff.

Margot - The Torch (Extrawelt Remixes)

Great Stuff continues to fly the flag for good maximalist electrohouse even if at this point the entire genre is in danger of drowning in a sea of Scandinavian Metallica remixes. Though in the recent past, fairly naff releases have been polished by ace remixers like Williams and Tobias Luetzenkirchen. This time around it’s Border Community’s Extrawelt remixing yet another forgettable original by Margot. They come up with a spaced out melancholy groove which seems to suggest that we’re past a point of no return; where once these progressive house refugee producers were apologising for how they really feel with sonic nods to electro, now they are proudly strutting down the street to the gym safe in the knowledge that house music is once again dominated by white fitness freaks.

Williams - Pinball

Williams, despite having some key connections (Glasgow Underground, Get Physical, Mylo, etc.) has yet to make a huge splash, despite an excellent, wide-ranging LP Love Crisis and a number of strong remixes. While “Pinball” won’t put him over the edge, it’s a strong track, displaying his great knack for the midtempo end of the disco floor. The Francisco Remix pushes things in the right direction for greater danceability, but the results are a bit bland to really stand out from the pack. Williams’ own Club Remix is even more floor-friendly, but still lacks that extra something to make it truly soar. Stick to the original version and wait for the album.
