Telex - Do Worry Remixes

200612"Neo-Disco

Perhaps the world at large has yet to embrace Telex, returned from an indefinable hiatus to plague us with delicious synthpop ditties, but one gets the feeling it doesn’t really matter to these Belgian pranksters. Lacing their “Do Worry” with typical analog swoops and absurdist sub-Kraftwerk vocalising, they’re hardly a revolutionary outfit - especially in these recycling-conscious times - but luckily they’ve added a stupid-clever “woops” line to their Star Wars synth-stabbing and motorik churning. Spanned across four remixes, it’s a bit too much of a good thing, but their space-disco lineage is made apparent in the jazz-on-phasers Lindstrom rework and the quite-ready-for-prime-time Bangkok Impact (it’s called album #2, Sami, album fucking #2) remix. On the less-essential side, Kid Alex would love to be Mylo but he’s a day late and a dollar short, and the “Dirty Dancing Remix” is all dirty and precious little dancing.

Telex - How Do You Dance (Remixes)

Another new Telex single? Funky. Though I’ve never bought M83’s whole bag, I have to love the crazy filter Eurohouse freakout he turns the chorus of “How Do You Dance” into. Unfortunately, this is alternated by periods of extreme stillness, and it’s killing my high the way Depeche Mode always did with “Blasphemous Rumours.” Unfortunate, too, since some lovely slurring fuzzbox sounds make their way into the final refrain. Luckily, Telex themselves are here to save the day with their own remix… or are they? Playing the tech-house angle, the results are worthy of some head-nodding, but the action never really builds. The Subs “Dirty Dancing” remix flattens out the bumps for the late-night discotheque floor, and I’m beginning to see the light. Swerving the fizzy wall of synths from the first mix around a stompin’ beat, we can finally answer the titular question in the positive”I dance like this!” Given my inveterate love of all things Gomma, you’d think I would slather some positive attention on the “Tomboy Remix.” You’d be right! Although it doesn’t explode an all-our blissbomb the way the non-wanky part of M83’s remix does, it certainly gets the job done in slinky, sultry fashion. Taking the less-techno, more-disco route suggested by the Subs version, Tomboy gets a freaky polyrhythmic thing going that is the most distinctive and danceable variation provided here. A truly mind-melting remix, however, will have to wait for someone who can splice the best elements of each version together into one colossal megamix.

Telex - On the Road Again

It’s been a rather long time since we had new music from Belgiums Telex, 20 years to be exact. In a sense, they never really lefttracks like “Moskow Diskow” have been staples all throughout the disco, house and techno eras. Reminiscent of Kraftwerk but with an added dose of humanity, the LED-eyed soul of “On the Road Again” is charming, sexy and addictive techno-pop. Not quite as chunky-funky as their 80’s work and also supremely conscious of current trends in electronic dance music, this is nonetheless a gorgeous comeback. Since no original version is included on this release, I can only infer what it sounds like, but the four versions presented here are all quality. Jo Bogaert gives us a sleek, nimble take, reminiscent of warm minimalists like Alex Smoke and SCSI-9. Flipping the script considerably is Marco Passarani, who jacks the crap out of you with his killer house remix, six minutes of wiggly synth, dreamy pads and bleepy, buoyant bliss. The Telex Remix occupies the middle ground between sharp, punchy electronics and the feel of their classic material, while Playgroup turn in a moody, genre-less rework that delves into blurry ambience, heavy echo effects and percussive breakdowns to maximize the psychedelic feel of Telex’s deep-space techno without sacrificing danceability.
