Trentemøller - Always Something Better

Released as a teaser for his Last Resort full-length, “Always Something Better” is significantly different here on 12-inch than it appears on the LP, but two of the four versions here do appear on the double-CD version of the release. That all said, the four versions here are also better. Richard Davis’ dark, brooding vocals flesh out the proceedings nicely, as things move from minimal grooves to dense ambient techno, to a stormy breakdown and back again on Trentemøller’s remix. The Vocal Version is a mid-tempo nodder with breakbeats and lots of textured sounds but the same light/dense dynamics, while the dub version is probably the most likely to see club action. Matthew Herbert’s “Bubble Remix” applies the same popping cut-n-paste technique that he seems to use on most of his remixes of late, but it does provide a nice alternative and is a lot of fun on headphones. A little something of quality for everyone then.

Guido Schneider - Focus On

Berlin-based Guido Schneider’s first full-length is also the first in the new Focus On artist-album concept series on Poker Flat. The CD version features Schneider mixing his own recent tracks (including “Sideways,” his fab collab with Sammy Dee, remixes for Brtschitsch & Galluzzi and Daniel Stefanik, and singles on Poker Flat and Tuning Spork) into a seamless portrait of his recent work. The LP version features only the exclusive new Schneider cuts from the CD, which more than stand on their own. The prospect of an artist mixing all his own tracks may sound a bit lame, but when the grooves are as diverse as Schneider’s, it hardly matters. Schneider’s catalog has been consistently great, but presented together like this, it takes on a whole new weight and depth. Bravo to Poker Flat for the concept—who’s up next?

Steve Bug - Bugnology 2

Poker Flat boss Steve Bug continues his series of Bugnology mixes with this second volume, picking up where the first left off. Each track have been edited and reconstructed on computers and, as such, the mix is spotless and the tracks fold together a lot cleaner than they otherwise might. This tactic leaves some listeners cold, but Bug’s construction and pace is so damn good and chooses such great tracks, that it seems like an empty complaint. Highlights include tracks from Pan-Pot, John Tejada, Gui Boratto, and Carl Craig’s already-classic remix of Theo Parrish’s “Falling Up.” Fans of the flawless, minimal mixes by the likes of Richie Hawtin need look no further for their next fix.

Limaçon - Catch

Northern Germany rarely gets the love that Cologne does, but Poker Flat has quietly been among the finest labels in the country for the past few years. Beatz regrets only getting around to truly paying strict reviewing attention based around the presence of a Sten remix, but those are the breaks. Kersten’s mix here is classic work, melding cloudy synthetic crescendos and a busy bassline to what becomes an oddly affecting melody by the track’s close. In fact, Limacon’s original mix almost comes off as a distended dub version of the meatier remix, but you can see immediately what drew Kersten to the material. Also on the B-side is the funkier “Joni,” which sounds just as oddly thin as its predecessor and just as entrancingly off-kilter.

In the Mix: Michael F. Gill - “Inflation Breeze”

With electro-house probably hitting its (relative) peak of popularity at the moment, I felt it was about time to do a mix of some of the great records that have been put out in the last year. There are a couple ongoing themes present to this mix. The first is that each successive track in this mix hits a little bit harder and louder than the last one. It’s a very gradual inflation process, starting from the ambient sighs of Donnacha Costello up until the bombastic Hystereo/Tiefschwarz/Ewan Pearson conclusion. To try and make these transitions as smooth as possible, I strove to include a good deal of melodic crosspllination between tracks. That is to say, the melodies of one track are very similiar in rhythm and/or timbre to the previous one. While a lot of DJ sets and mixes of electrohouse have either an acid-tech or EBM/goth type feel to them, I aimed to make this mix as fluent and burdenless as possible. You could almost say it sounds like a mechanical breeze. Perhaps, in fact, an inflation breeze.

01 Donnacha Costello - Cocoa (Minimise)
02 Water Lilly - Tangle of Wires (Mental Groove)
03 Delon & Dalcan - No Speak [Tekel Remix] (Boxer Sport)
04 Sweet ‘n’ Candy feat. Rufus Dunkel - Veritable (Lebensfreude)
05 Tomas Andersson - The Birthday Party (Bpitch Control)
06 Unit 4 - Bodydub [Bangok Impact Remix] (Clone)
07 Etienne De Crecy - Fast Track (Different Recordings/PIAS)
08 Tomas Andersson - Happy Happy (Bpitch Control)
09 Huntemann - Femme Fatale (International Deejay Gigolo)
