Socks and Sandals - Rishi Saturn

The fugged-out duo of Socks and Sandals are certainly prone to an unfashionable disappearance. The latest came after their samplethon of Herbert-ian proportions with the Shatter EP over a year ago. The follow-up, Rishi Saturn, sounds like it made up for lost time – taking less of a stride than a full-on leap from critical beats to minimal wobble.

Like the hints of ghostly whistles and xylophones on “Space Stuff,” Socks and Sandals sound far more willing to splice and regurgitate everything, a la Jan Svankmajer’s Dimensions of Dialogue. “Pura Vida” gives tech-house a good name by immediately locking into gear and toying with an indecipherable array of clicks, pops, and crackles. The same goes for the damp-Latin-droplets of their own remix of “Lucidril”. But there’s something I miss about how straight-faced these songs are – they’re so demur when I expect them to be completely off-kilter.

Socks and Sandals - Shatter

Already releasing tracks on the Foundsound and Microcosm labels, Socks and Sandals’ Shatter EP is actually the group’s first solo release, but they’re definitely not willing to sound like it. By burrowing into the vogue realm of Herbert-ian flavored micro-sampling and coming out with unexpectedly vivid results, the group’s original conception as a strictly live band seems all the more criminal by the day. Instead, Socks and Sandals sound like they lived with the title track until they cleaned out every tic, cough, and white-noise-fuzzball they could find. Unwilling to focus on the crevices, the group also sculpts droning swirls into a long lost realm of Frank Gehry sonic architecture for “Found in Space.”

In the Mix: Michael F. Gill - “Lessons In Not Thinking #1″

The first in what will hopefully a series of manic dance mixes that spans through all kinds of new house, minimal, techno, and disco in a quick, ADD-type of fashion. 31 tracks in under 80 minutes is a bit overwhelming, and that’s exactly the point. My experience of dance music is often overwhelming, and involves hyperactive and obsessive emotions. It’s visceral and physical, a melting sigh with a craftsmen’s touch. It’s that Tuesday night at 4 am with the headphones on, lying on the kitchen floor, thinking about chaos and Taoism. Or something.
