DJ Koze vs. Sid le Rock - Naked (Cereal/Killers)

Peter Chambers: “Both Sid (Pan/Tone) le Rock and DJ (Adolf Noise) Koze take a ‘one eyebrow and a brimming glass raised’ approach to production—if their methods of mayhem intersect, it’s at a point where irreverence meets festivity to do the wild thang on your mixer.”

Jacopo Carreras - Olanto (Lan Muzic)

Move D - Anne Will (Remixes) (Liebe Detail Spezial)

Jacopo Carreras - Olanto

The Lee Jones remix was the one I heard first, late January actually, a steady round thwop with a mess of skittering synth rhythms on top. Like some of my favorite no-wave disco, the bass & drum grooves were so locked and hard, it doesn’t really matter what the hell is happening over them, much like how only the most truly beautiful people can wear those high-waisted jeans and not look like herbs. The Italy-born Carreras’s original, which I just heard, is way better though. Reverb-treated synths in competing octaves refuse to acknowledge each other, bouncing around for two cockteasing minutes before the beat drops and they’re forced to give up the charade. With more time the synths grow more acidic and streak both fatter and longer across the pan, which might bum out the Chem Bros haters, but my guess is not for long.

Peter Van Hoesen - Increments

Lan Muzic, Exercise One’s label, is pretty trustworthy, and it’s not let down by this release. The elastic techno sound of the label owners is given a slightly more frenetic twist by Van Hoesen. “Increments” and “Static C” almost sound like techno in the old sense, given how much faster in BPMs they are than the usual minimal fare. Exercise One do a remix of “Increments” which has that boompty-house bassline you heard on Gabriel Ananda’s “Doppelwhipper,” and ends up being the best track on this 12”.

Sweet ‘n Candy - Unbreakable Remixes

Sweet ‘n Candy, aka Berlin’s Rico Henschel, emerged last year as one of the better producers of brittle, bass-heavy minimal techno, and his “Unbreakable” from last year’s Dead Behind The Ears EP is remixed here in wonderfully claustrophobic fashion by Justin Maxwell and Lan Muzic’s Exercise One. While there are dozens of similarly minded records, both mixes don’t at all sound like they’re being minimal for minimal’s sake. Maxwell’s mix in particular translates the idea of minimal as the notion of trapping energy in a compressed space, and then watching it trying to get out. The prickly tweaked synths respond to bouncing off the walls with a small but noticeable pitch-bending after every release, resulting in a very inorganic bubbling sound. Exercise One’s mix is more typical of the overall Dumb Unit sound, with gritty low-slung basslines and thick bristly hats, and snare. Give me this any day over the recent crop of M_nus, Contexterrior, and Tuning Spork 12 inches.

Arne Michel - Halbzeit

The relatively new Berlin label Lan Muzic hasn’t come across my radar before, but now that it has, it will remain so based on this truly minimal 12” from Thee Engineer. The A-side to the release resembles Sleeparchive in its attentiveness to a small palette of sounds, never reaching far outside of rolling tribalisms (“Truckstop”) or glitches and glides (“Omni”). The strait-laced opening side is flipped on its head, though, by the big-room house and clipped-guitar riffs of “Half Truth” and Alex Smoke’s mix of “Truckstop,” which lets out some of the air of the closeted original.

In the Mix: Michael F. Gill - “Lessons In Not Thinking #1″

The first in what will hopefully a series of manic dance mixes that spans through all kinds of new house, minimal, techno, and disco in a quick, ADD-type of fashion. 31 tracks in under 80 minutes is a bit overwhelming, and that’s exactly the point. My experience of dance music is often overwhelming, and involves hyperactive and obsessive emotions. It’s visceral and physical, a melting sigh with a craftsmen’s touch. It’s that Tuesday night at 4 am with the headphones on, lying on the kitchen floor, thinking about chaos and Taoism. Or something.
