Convextion - Miranda Remixes

200712"TechnoDub

Dallas native Gerald Hanson originally released “Miranda” as an untitled cut way back in 1995, as the first release on Sean Deason’s Matrix label. As it was a small pressing and unavailable for many years, it has grown and grown in stature exponentially since then, buoyed by lots of club play from famous jocks. Now, Hanson finally cashes in by repressing the original mix and adding three new remixes in a very limited (1,200 copies worldwide) double pack. The hype has been ridonkulous, and after waiting for months and through several delays (apparently there was a pressing-plant/mastering issue or something) that served only to stoke the flames even further, I felt lucky as hell just to get a copy. So the question on everybody’s lips is, of course: is the hype justified?

Well, no, of course not. The original mix is a damn fine piece of second-wave Detroit techno, all jumping rhythms, dubbed-out keyboard stabs, and ring-modulated riffage, but fuck, this ain’t the second coming of “Strings of Life” or something. I mean, it’s good, and I can say from experience that it sounds great in a club through the big system, but it hardly makes the top 10 Detroit techno tracks of all time—maybe top 30.

The remixes by Deason (as Psykofuk), Deep Chord, and Echospace are a bit of a letdown too. Deason doesn’t do nearly enough with it (sounds like he just turned up the kick drum, sped up the tempo a bit, and added a fairly useless vocal sample, none of which the original needed), and ends up with what amounts to a decent Jeff Mills-esque track. Deep Chord and Echospace both turn in 12-minute Basic Channel-style cosmic dub versions that are quite nice for what they are, but are hardly the stuff of legend. So in the final tally, rather than move heaven and earth (or knock over an ATM) to get one, you might be better advised to wait for the inevitable single-plate reissue that is sure to come around eventually. In the meantime, I’m quite sure you can hear the original in clubs all year round and likely on some mix CDs in no time.

Johannes Volk - The Mysteries of Tharsis Montes

200612"DetroitAmbient

Mission 6277 continues to be a brave imprint dedicated to exposing new talent, and thanks to label boss Jeff Mills’ belief in exposing the next generation of electronic composers, that trend should continue. Johannes Volk is the latest unknown to catch Mills’ golden ear, and based on his debut EP, there should be more to come. This vaguely Martian-themed five-tracker is chock full of deep chords, plucked-string synth sounds, skittering drum patterns, and lots and lots of atmosphere. You know, all the stuff you love about Jeff Mills records. The surprises come when, after the Mills-clone grooves of opener “Memories of the Astronaut,” the beats disappear altogether for the rest of the side. The flip returns to the Millsian Minimalism style, but one can already hear Mills himself using the ambient tracks as mix tools for his own beats. All props to Mills for being adventurous enough to release the Mission material at all, but if he keeps it up, he might just have to watch his back.

Jeff Mills - Natural World

200612"Techno

Jeff Mills has always been a prolific artist, and his music often sounds just as restless as he does, like trying to fall asleep after three cups of coffee. On this three-track EP, Mills is back on top form with a return to his classic “Millsian Minimalism” style, as well as a return to his Axis-offshoot imprint Purpose Maker. In Mills’ case, “minimal” doesn’t always refer to the instrumentation, more to the activity within the grooves—his music is deceptively simple and hypnotic, but always shifting and changing in such a subtle way, one might not notice until the fourth or fifth time through. Lead track “Transport” starts with a repetitive set of synth, drum, and cymbal patterns, then gently phases and tweaks them in and out of the mix in that style that has been copied by everyone from San Francisco to Tokyo and back again. Before your eyes snap open, four minutes have gone by, the drums are going off, one synth is gone, and the cymbals are crashing. “Kat Luck” builds the groove in layers and moves them around dub style—just what the hell is he doing to those cymbals anyway? Flip side “The Clairvoyant” unfolds layers of clattering percussion and a deeeeeep bass bubble before a bleeping analog synth wanders in the room and back out again. Mills has never sounded finer, and that is really saying something.

David Wulle & Andy Garcia - Untitled

200612"TechnoDetroit

Detroit-based Docile Recordings has been toiling in semi-obscurity for a few years now, and it is a crying shame. Over a series of 12-inches, none of which feature song titles, David Wulle and Andy Garcia (and a handful of others) have crafted a truly dynamite set of DJ tools, and this release is no exception. Equal parts Akufen, Jeff Mills, and Basic Channel, Wulle and Garcia turn in four tracks of short, clipped, and looped noises, beats, and throbs and mix them up dub-style for a truly intriguing mix. And just when you think you have them all figured out, track B1 drops the kick drum altogether and is all the spacier (and effective) for it. Did I mention it comes on cool grey marbled wax? Don’t sleep.
