Socks and Sandals - Shatter

Already releasing tracks on the Foundsound and Microcosm labels, Socks and Sandals Shatter EP is actually the groups first solo release, but theyre definitely not willing to sound like it. By burrowing into the vogue realm of Herbert-ian flavored micro-sampling and coming out with unexpectedly vivid results, the groups original conception as a strictly live band seems all the more criminal by the day. Instead, Socks and Sandals sound like they lived with the title track until they cleaned out every tic, cough, and white-noise-fuzzball they could find. Unwilling to focus on the crevices, the group also sculpts droning swirls into a long lost realm of Frank Gehry sonic architecture for Found in Space.

Ultrakurt - En Short EP

Phillys Foundsound label is quickly making a name for itself in the world of cut-up electronics. For their fourth release, the French duo Ultrakurt has taken time out from their new label minibar to bestow some science on us with En Short. Composed of three tracks, the EP is sort of a how-to primer for those of us who find Akufen a tad too messy. The main rhythmic basis for Carnadada is a breathy, unintelligible male voice that oftentimes seems to want to go further with his dialogue, while Yves Baustin uses that same basis for a more bass-driven enterprise that trades subtlety for a hip-shaking good time. Fusiphorm turns up for a remix of the latter, adding a dash of melody to the whole thing, flipping the coin on a group far more concerned with the body than the mind.
