The Week In Review: 2007, Week 24

DeepChord - Vantage Isle (echospace [detroit])
Genre: Techno, Dub

Todd Hutlock: Vantage Isle is perfection for anyone looking for the logical successors to the Basic Channel throne, or just looking for something mellow for those steamy late summer nights.

Ame - Balandine (Innervisions)
Genre: Techno, Progressive/Trance

Gudrun Gut - In Pieces (Monika Enterprises)
Genre: Downtempo, Minimal/Deep

Peter Chambers: If you’ve ever seen Michael Mayer do his dance behind the decks, the Burger/Voigt remix is, well…this is what the dance “sounds” like.

Audion - Noiser / Freds Bells (Spectral Sound)
Genre: Minimal/Tech, Techno

Nate DeYoung: Dears previous all-excess all-acid diet lead to the dreadful and desperate cul-de-sac of “how can I add even more?” With “Bells” and his recent string of songs, it sounds like he realized the question shouldve been “How can I make it sound like I’m adding even more?”

DJ Koze - All The Time (Philpot)
Genre: Minimal/Tech

Argy - 1985 (Liebe Detail Spezial)
Genre: Minimal/Deep, House

Motorcitysoul - Kazan (Exit Cube) (Aus Music)
Genre: Electro-House, Minimal/Deep

Peter Chambers: Classy gear for warming up cool-hearted floors.

Water Lilly - Invisible Ink

What a relentless track: it’s like your head is being run through a sewing machine, the synths needling away at every frequency range while the midtempo kick thumps along obliviously. Beyond the rhythm, Water Lilly keeps the pitches at really tense intervals, uninterested in resolving them until she breaks into the main riff, which is a lonely bit you might have expected on the last Knife album. If it went longer than 7:25 I’d say enough already, but that’s exactly where it stops, an etude in tension/release.

Arnaud Rebotini’s Black Strobe Mix on the flip is, as you’d expect, a harder, darker, “slamming” take on the original, something that’d fit perfectly into electroclash sets and current distorted-to-death bloghouse outings. It’s also the first time you’ll be able to make out the vocals from the original - “Except for me, what else do you want?” - which are presented here as a centerpiece, something of a meta-thesis for the rest of the mix. Rebotini bests the original when he moves into a sub-bass acid freakout towards the middle, and never lets up.

Toby Tobias - Daves Sex Bits

200712"Neo-DiscoBalearic

Like his first single for the Rekid label, Toby Tobias still doesn’t settle for anything less than a genre-clusterfuck. “Dave’s Sex Bits” couldve just coined beardo-house and called it a day, but dude won’t let go of every little toy in his crate. With a constant ambient drone, Tobias stuffs in every swell, light-saber crash, and gurgling birdcall that he can touch. Even the funk licks of the bass are squashed in a song that nods to cosmic aspirations but can’t feel any space. On the flip, Quiet Village (comprised of Rekid label owner Matt Edwards and Joel Martin) rebuilds the sex bits from the ground up. Using delay like a tienne-Jules Marey photograph, the Quiet Village remix not only captures momentary glimmers of the original song, it also strobes in and out of the regulars forward progression of time. Thoroughly disorienting and wobbling near the black hole that swallowed Motiivis 1939, Quiet Villages remix might chug along to its own drummer but itll be hard to imagine a more massive sounding remix this year.

Black Strobe - Last Dub on Earth

Weren’t these guys supposed to put out two albums last year? Instead we got an EP filled with recycled cuts from their early vinyl, and we began to wonder if the notion of scary, big-floor electro-acid thumposity was just too good to last. Black Strobe have always purveyed a singular dynamic - like a dance AC/DC. “Last Dub On Earth” doesn’t exactly upset that notion, but it does break up the hegemony of dark, fucked-up beats by giving us something a good deal warmer - though I wouldn’t go so far as to call it human. “Nazi Trance Fuck Off” as remixed by James Holden on the flip clicks back the niceness even further, but it repaints the Strobe in psychedelic hues potent enough to be worthy of a potential flashback. Is there such a thing as Nazi Trance? Is it a Dead Kennedys cover? The answers to these questions could quite possibly drive you insane. So, too, might this schizoid cauldron of bubbling analog bleeps and hallucinogenic echoes, the sonic equivalent of being chased down blind alleys by PCP-wielding French lunatics with an Orb fixation, bent on raping your mind with their delirious near-ambient noodlings. Shiversomely delightful.

Rekid - Made in Menorca

Depending on where youre coming from, Rekids Matt Edwards will probably be better known for his big-room house remixes of Elton John, Tiga, and Jentina or for his bearded disco as Quiet Village Project. Rekid catches him making slo-mo frozen-in-the-strobe-light discoid house. 85 Space and Tranzit sound like Edwards has slowed them down in an audio editor until echo and spring reverb swirls like thick cream poured slowly into black coffee, and thats probably what they arescrewed, but not chopped. Sometimes I listen to this record and nothing happens, its disco with its blood drained and cold lips, but sometimeslike right now!the degraded cowbell and resonant white noise creep of tracks like Lost Star6 or Arp are as voluptuous and overwhelming as any woman in a Fellini movie.
