Klaxons - Gravitys Rainbow

Rave culture is barely 20 years old, and the hangovers and post-coital guilt still remain. Now we have a photogenic band being touted as nu rave, and they have a member named Captain Strobe. But dont worry just yet. The Klaxonss single, Gravitys Rainbow is more SXSW convention showcase than Ministry of Sound. Its understandable why the tune is an MTV2 hit, Gravity has the right 00s alt-rawk clichs lined up: a jerky Radio 4 bassline that smokes cigs to look tough, a heartbroken guitar melody a la Interpol, and Becks karaoke-ish, stoned n dazed vocals. The remixes fit the raver tag a bit better. The Nightmoves mix struts to a decent disco kick and an acid-didgeridoo riff, but its the Van She Mix that will most likely be spun in basement clubs in Berlin and Williamsburg. Its got Daft Punk robo-disco calls, the lost-Cinderella-on-the-dancefloor melody recalling Annies Heartbeat, and 8-bit synth twinkles worthy of The Legend Of Zelda. Finely calculated stuff.

Ellen Allien & Apparat - Way Out

The extended dance remix makes a welcome reappearance on the second from the still wondrous Orchestra of Bubbles. “Way Out,” gets a loving elongation that is, yes, more danceable, and also stretches out the great bleepity bloops that got compressed in the album edit. It’s casual Friday at the meat-packing plant for Robag Wrumhe’s mix, a loose-limbed romp through mechanistic EBM beats and the sound of power systems failing. But this release is one worth buying for the b-sides alone”Rotary” ups the BPMs yet preserves a sense of calm, buffeted all the while by Ellen’s trademark moody synthetics. “Sleepless,” on the other hand, is a stunner, with a slithering Allien vocal (think Annie in her sultry mode or early Bjork) contrasted by some zither-plucking action and the rising, then falling patterns of drums and waveforms.

Defender - Defender

Known mostly for their excellent remix work for Annie, DFA 1979 (their take on “Black History Month” was one of the defining mixes of last year), Royksopp, and Goldfrapp, the duo of Alan Braxe and Fred Falke make their debut as Defender with this stellar two-track single. The self-titled A-side is a bouncy, aggro romp that strongly recalls Human After All era Daft Punk (muted metal guitars, robotic backbeat,) but with an added kick in the pants courtesy of a monstrous hard-house thump. The flipside, “Bliss” is refreshingly different, a slice of pure disco heaven dripping with FX-daubed strings and gorgeous synth runs atop a smooth-yet-funky backbeat. Two tracks, two winners, and with a perfect run so far in the remix department, we could be looking at another great year for the duo.

Kid606 - Done with the Scene EP

“Done with the Scene” is the song of an artist still trying to figure out what to do next. A droning, electro-pop synth melody first stares at the sunset while holding his chin with both hands. The song then grows more restless as a steady mid-tempo beat pushes the momentum with bits of guitar dropping in and a brazen Spaghetti Western-synth shouting out the melody. The song title suggests that Miguel Depedro is trying to move on after quitting his habit of being a yin-yang, either releasing records as a noisenik who smashes everything in a room with a whiffle bat or releasing Mother’s Day presents of synth-pop. As to where he goes next, it’s difficult to predict. The Done with the Scene EP gives some suggestions with remixes of a few tracks from his album Resilience as well as a cover of Annie’s cult hit, “Heartbeat.” In the latter, Depedro’s treatment keeps its focus on the song’s hook by smothering it with fuzzed-up shoegazer textures and scattered, mumbled vocals. It could’ve been much stronger without the odd synth screeches and the rather disjointed synching of everything.

As for the remixes, post-rock stars Mogwai infuse “Down” with rawer energy by piercing the song with feedback and garbled beats, along with playing hide-and-seek with the melody. Bravecaptain places a cosmic glint to “Down” with cascading synth work and live, rolling beats that is all sublime until the band gets cute by singing the song title. Elsewhere, Her Space Holiday turns “Spanish Song” into a song that could play on an in-store video at The Gap, and Swedish post-techno maven Dwayne Sodaberk steals the show by radically mutating the melody from the gentle guitar ballad, “King of Harm” into a rampaging, post-punk dirge that resembles an Interpol b-side. Sodaberk’s remix is brave as hell for risking utter failureGod knows what he would’ve done with “Heartbeat.”

Annie - DJ Kicks

Its an apt metaphor: on the !K7 website, the label is hawking a promotional scarf to accompany the release of Annies newest DJ Kicks album. Problem is: its made out of cotton, and looks for the world like itd keep you warm only in the confines of, say, Misshapes on a Friday night. Annies DJ mix will similarly make you look fashionable in a club full of people that enjoy nu-pop and its comfortable version of pleasure, but itll never get you close to sweat. Save that for the professionals. Buy Alan Braxe & Friends The Upper Cuts instead and get the only track worth hearing (released since 2000), plus a whole lot more.

In the Mix: Michael F. Gill - “Romance Drones”

The inspirations for this mix were the recent singles Cosmic Sandwich and Odyssey by Steve Barnes, which showcase a new and interesting tangent on the basic micro/electro-house template. It was an epic, sprawling sound that combined the romantic melancholy of Michael Mayers Immer with a heavy psychedelic bent that engulfs you through a series of visceral repetition, trippy vocals, and wandering stratospheric synths. Ive picked tracks here that complement this sound, and sequenced them in such a fashion that the music becomes more open and extroverted as time passes. Hence, things begin with the misty noir-ish glimmers of Anders ilar, move through the brisk druggy bliss of Ewan Pearsons Closer Musik remix, and end up with some Italo/Metro Area influenced tracks by Jersey Devil Social Club and Justus Kohncke. This being the internet and not the club, Ive taken the time to do some re-edits of the tracks in order to emphasize the themes of the mix. I hope you enjoy it.
