UK Chart Prediction League: Week 002

in a shocking upset, the person who runs the poll is currently in the lead after the first week’s results. Despite the masterful (read: lucky) picking of last week, the luck didn’t extend to the rest of the American team and, according to the averages, the United Kingdom is off to a healthy lead. Here are the results:

Individual

Todd Burns – 26
Dom Passantino – 19
Simon Hampson – 18
Scott McKeating – 10
Scott Plagenhoef – 10
William B. Swygart – 4
John Brandt – 0
Gavin Mueller – 0

Team

United Kingdom – 12.75
United States – 9

This week’s predictions, minus Gavin Mueller and Simon Hampson who are the first participants to take one of the four bye weeks allotted to each participant:

United States
Todd Burns

1. Sam and Mark – With A Little Help From My Friends

How this type of song gets the top of the charts is beyond me. It’s rather interesting—I love the UK charts for their diversity, but it’s the same kind of love that I have for the lower half of lists, where the interesting selections begin to reveal themselves.

2. Ronan Keating – She Believes in Me

I hope it’s going to be a big week for ballads. Anything this guy touches seems to be destined for the top five, at least, and far be it for me to pick him much lower. The song? Eh, I can’t really talk about it. It just makes me sad inside. Hott pictures on the website, though.

3. LMC vs. U2 – Take Me To The Clouds Above

Can you say transitional number one? But not until this week, Dom. You have to think this one is finally cooling off a bit, especially with the big two names entering into the charts. But I don’t think it’ll drop much lower than this. Kelis or Outkast can’t go higher…can they?

4. Kelis – Milkshake

I hope not. I’m glad I haven’t had to talk about this song much, because I think it’s one of the worst Neptunes productions of recent times. As Gavin and Scott both say, she’s the unluckiest woman in pop. And it’s obvious, with the rest of the album being little to speak of.

5. Fatman Scoop feat. The Crooklyn Clan – It Takes Scoop

I’ve never heard this song. I hear he yells quite well. And he’s American. Strange that he’s big over there. 6. Outkast – Hey Ya!

If I have to hear this song one more time there will be death. The curse of Clear Channel and Outkast. A band so diverse that any of their genre distinctions can be broken down to include this song. Honestly, five different stations in the Cincinnati area have this on their playlist.

7. Michelle – All This Time

More boring ballad tripe. I wonder when Pop Idol will produce an artist that doesn’t release a ballad as their first single. Not as long as Cowell is involved, I’m guessing. I’m not one to comment on appearances, but the cover of her single makes her look rather large.

8. Boogie Pimps – Somebody to Love

More dance versions of popular 70s classic, please!

9. Blazin’ Squad – Here 4 One

Sounds kind of like DMX to me. Maybe it’s my laptop speakers or something. Nice crunchy beat, though. No chance for breaking America, though.

10. Ferry Corsten - Rock Your Body Rock

I’m probably going a bit overboard with the dance-oriented songs, but I think this is how it may turn out. I’ve probably lost it. We’ll see if I’m in the lead again next week. If not, I’ll just have to fix the standings again.
