Label Profile
Mego Records
Vienna and Berlin

issuing its first release only eight years ago, the Vienna/Berlin based Mego label has stretched the limits of IDM music to its breaking point. Holding only true to the principle of being “a platform for all kinds of information and communication... [and having a] glorious disregard for being pigeonholed into any one genre.” The brainchild of Ramon Bauer, Peter Meininger, and Andreas Pieper, the label’s first releases were couched in an abrasiveness that could only be rivaled by artists such as Merzbow and an abstract quality that predated the emergence of Oval.

The releases on the label have varied wildly, however, in the recent past, between the live laptop constructions of Fenn O' Berg and the disjointed avant pop of Noriko Tujiko. In fact, as time goes on Mego has become more accessible- not a function of selling out to a pop audience, but a function of an openness to new directions in music. Despite this, the so called accessible artists of the roster display a great deal of the sonic detail and intricacy of the most impenetrable acts on the roster. Rest assured, however, the label shows no sign of abating in its original line up of uncompromising noise artists as recent releases by Kevin Drumm and Pita (as DACM) have been as brutally beautiful as any of the previous records on the label.

One of the more interesting facets of the label, however, is the packaging of the CDs. The artwork is always beautifully rendered and often the CD packaging is irregularly shaped making them items to be treasured, rather than to be kept on the shelf with all of the other CDs in your collection.

Whether it is regarded as glorious noise or an unmitigated racket, the label continues in its forward path of releasing innovative works from numerous artists in a variety of mediums. In recognition of these efforts, the label was awarded the Prix Ars Electronica 99 Award of Distinction for Digital Musics.
