Label Profile
K Records

so what is K records? Simply put, they are a label that, “explodes the teenage underground into passionate revolt against the corporate ogre world-wide.” And according to their site ( they are made of, “a conspiracy of gravediggers, spies, swim instructors and international pop stars.” But one probably knows K Records better for their music.

Conceived in 1982 by Calvin Johnson in Olympia, Washington, K Records started as a specifically cassette oriented label. Their first release, the Supreme Cool Beings’ Survival of The Coolest put K on the map in Olympia. Getting inspiration from both the old Op magazine and Sub Pop magazine, Calvin started a label that was not made for monetary reasons, but a label that cataloged music from a tremendously large variety of sources. Punk, Pop, Hip-Hop, garage, and many more blurred genres can be found on K’s releases. Beat Happening, Beck, Built To Spill, The Microphones, Dub Narcotic Sound System and Mirah are some very noteworthy K artists.

The future for K is to keep on releasing records not for their worth in terms of sales and money, but in terms of documenting art. Calvin Johnson and the rest of the team at K records will always keep K independent. So keep an eye out for K records future releases. Chances are, one will find some recordings that you aren’t especially fond of, but if you keep on searching, you are guaranteed an amazing record find. This can be attributed to the incredibly diverse roster and releases of K records.
